Last-Minute Romantic Getaway: How to Find It
The secret isn't waiting until the last moment — it's knowing where to look and when.
Perfect timing
Contrary to popular belief, the best last-minute deals don't arrive 24 hours before — they come 3–7 days before, when the hotel realises a room will stay empty and prefers to fill it at a reduced price. The golden window: Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for the following weekend.
The best sites for last-minute deals
- Booking.com Last Minute Deals: filter for "Tonight" or "This weekend", sort by rating. Often 30–40% below the standard price.
- Secret Escapes: specialises in last-minute luxury hotels. Only the best properties sign up — perfect for us.
- Mr & Mrs Smith: boutique romantic hotels, often with flash sales for members.
- Directly with the hotel: many hotels prefer to sell direct at a reduced price rather than through OTAs. Simply call and ask if they have availability for the weekend.
The phone call trick
Call the hotel on a Thursday and say: "We're a couple celebrating our anniversary — do you have availability for Saturday night? What can you offer us?". This magic phrase works better than any website: the hotel knows it might be left with an empty room and will often include an upgrade, champagne or breakfast.
When NOT to go last minute
Valentine's Day, mid-August, New Year's Eve, Easter: on these dates romantic hotels are fully booked months in advance. For these occasions, book at least 3–4 months ahead.
